The 2 most important numbers are your Points Quota and your Gaspar Cup Points. Your Points Quota number is what you're trying to beat when you play in a Gaspar Invitational. You win Gaspar Cup Points when you play in a Gaspar Invitational AND when you play in a Gaspar Challenge, which is a one-on-one golf match that can happen anytime, anywhere!
The Points Quotas adjust after each tournament. A Points Quota will increase by 1/2 of any amount by which you exceed your existing quota, rounded up to the next number. For example, if your quota is 22, and you achieve 26 points in the Gaspar Invitational (exceed by 4), your quota will go up to 24 for the next tournament. If you exceed by 1, you go up by 1. If you exceed by 3, you go up by 2. Half of 3 is 1.5, so you go up by 2. Remember, we round up. We do this to try and give everyone a chance to win, and not the same players month after month.
If you miss your quota, you drop by exactly 1 point, no matter how many points lower than your quota you end up with in that tournament. If your Points Quota is 22, and you score 4 points in a month, missing your Quota by an unheard of 18 points, your Points Quota will only drop to a 21 the next month. This helps eliminate sandbagging.
If you shoot your exact number or exceed it by 1/2 point, you remain the same for the next month. If you miss by 1/2 point, you will stay the same also. Only players who exceed or miss by at least 1 point will move up or down.
INACTIVE: This means you have an established Points Quota, but have not yet played in a Gaspar Invitational in the current calendar year.
NEW: A new player is not eligible to play in the Points Game until they have played 2 Gaspar Invitationals, thus establishing a Points Quota. The ONLY exception to this is if you have an existing GHIN handicap and have played recent rounds with one or more of our players, and we have a basis to assign a realistic Points Quota. This would allow you to play in the Points Game in your first Gaspar Invitational.
New players can participate in the Skins Game, the Closest to the Pin contests and the Sink the Putt Challenge.
Based solely on scoring points in Gaspar Invitationals and Gaspar Challenges. Want to win the Gaspar Cup? Play in more Gaspar Invitationals and Gaspar Challenges.
Points are assigned as follows:
Gaspar Invitational
A first timer cannot play in the Points Game unless a founding member knows their game intimately, and can vouch for their average score. However, they will receive 5 points for playing in a Gaspar Invitational. Players who are eligible to play in the Points Game will receive 5 points PLUS 1 point for every player they beat. Winner receives a special pirate medallion and holds the Pirate trophy until the next Gaspar Invitational. Last place holds the Wench trophy until the next Gaspar Invitational.
Gaspar Challenge
10 points for a win. 5 points for a loss. 8 points to each player for a tie. We award those who are willing to accept a Challenge, even if they do not win. You may challenge anyone, but you may only challenge one player in a round of golf. Another player may challenge you, however. You must play in the same group, and the format is Match Play. Game features a handicapping system based on each player's Points Quota. Lower ranked players receive 1 stroke on the number of holes equal to how many points lower their Quota is, multiplied by 75%, rounded up. For example, a player with a Points Quota of 20 plays a player with a Quota of 15. Take the difference of 5, multiply by 75%, and the handicap is 3.75, rounded up to 4 strokes. The player with a Quota of 15 receives 1 stroke on the 4 hardest holes based on the scorecard. Minimum wager amount is $5, with no max. Be brave, buccaneers! Please see the Gaspar Challenge page for more rules.
Gaspar Cup Championship
In this inaugural season, we will play an abbreviated Gaspar Cup Championship, with the top 4 ranked players in the Cup Points chase playing in the Gaspar Cup Playoff. The Cup chase will end immediately after the December Gaspar Invitational, so Cup Points from the December Invitational will count.
The top ranked player in the Gaspar Cup will play the 4th ranked player. The 2nd ranked player will play the 3rd ranked player. The winners will play in the Gaspar Cup Championship before January 1st 2020. Format is match play, based on 75% of the difference in players' Points Quotas, just like a regular Gaspar Challenge. The winner of the match will be declared the Gaspar Golf Champion for 2019.
The semi-final matches will require a minimum of a $10 wager, and the Championship round will be a minimum of a $20 wager.
The Gaspar Cup Champion will receive a prize purse equal to $1 for every player who plays in the Points Game in the remaining Gaspar Invitationals. We will begin the 2020 season by committing $1 per Points Game player per Gaspar Invitational as well, so the 2020 Gaspar Cup Championship should be worth a nice prize, probably worth $300-500 or more.
