After playing with Antonio a few weeks ago, I predicted that either he or Rick Rhodes had a good chance of winning the first Gaspar Invitational. Antonio's overall game had greatly improved over what I remembered from him last time we played. His short game was spot on, and his irons were much improved. He's always been a good putter, so I felt he was someone to watch. Well, Big Mex didn't just win, he won BIG. Frank and I had raised everyone's points quotas up a bit since it was our first tournament since the last time we played in a Bragger a few months back. I think Antonio was a 15, but was moved to a 17. He proceeded to shoot an 85, and exceed his quota by 7 points for 24 points! Congrats to the "Houston Rocket," Antonio Galavis for becoming our first champion, and winning the Jose Gaspar trophy! Antonio took home $120 in cash, a champion's medallion and an official Gaspar Golf dri-fit t-shirt for his effort.
2nd place went to a very deserving Todd "Big Country" Broadbent, who was in the clubhouse with the lead until the Galaviz group posted their numbers. Todd shot 93 to make 20-1/2 points, exceeding his quota by 4-1/2 points to become the Skallywag this month, and took home $80 in cash.
Last place, known as the Wench, went dubiously to our favorite Kingpin, Tony Ambrose. "T-Bone" had to make 16 points, but was only able to muster out 2-1/2 points, missing his quota by 13-1/2 points. Better luck next time, Real Julie Ambrose's hubby! When asked about his performance, and if he wanted to make any comments, he replied, "N-n-n-n-o th-th-th-anks!"
CLOSEST TO THE PINS were Todd Broadbent on #3, Dave Copson on #7, Dave Tomello on #11, and Todd Minichilli on #15.
SKINS were won by Chris Sorah on #2, Tres Fenton on #4, Sergio Delgado on #8, Jack Coffey on #10, and Dave Tomello on #12.
