The Pirates invaded Clermont National Golf Club on a breezy and overcast morning in central Florida, enjoying big elevation changes for Florida. The course was in good shape, with the greens not being quite as fast as they told us they were, but it was a really fun layout, with a couple of driveable par 4 holes. We almost lost a pirate due to Mike "White Lightning" Caporale cutting the corner on a 340 yard par 4, narrowly missing Tarun "T-God" Godiyal's father-in-law, Bob Bozek, by 3 feet, hitting the green about 10' from the hole. When everyone finished, most stayed for one of the most incredible after-golf atmospheres ever seen by Gaspar Golf, with a couple hundred men, women and kids enjoying an awesome entertainment area, with live music, great food and lots of adult beverages. A few of us had a putting contest for cash, with El Presidente winning the first round and $15, and then the Freakin' Rican Bomber, Rico Velez, winning the 2nd round and $50 from Caporale, who also had me buy ice cream for 3 little girls who were rooting for and booing the participants. Now, on to the results.
Ken "Scratch" Cabrera has repeated as tournament champion after 4 long years and 5 months, with a fantastic score of 80 and a +6 finish in the quota game. Kenny won $252 for 1st place and the title of Jose Gaspar. He also grabbed a CTP for another $28 for a total of $280 in prize money at the Pirate Invasion.
Runner-up was the almost father-in-lawless Tarun Godiyal, who shot a 93, finishing +5.5, taking home $84 and title of Skallywag.
Third place went to a surging Fausto Diaz, who fired an 87 to get to +4 in the quota game, winning $28, plus another $22 for a skin, for a total of $50 and title of Deckhand.
In what can only be called a travesty, the sexy green eyed Puerto Rican former Playboy, Frank Perez, earned the title of Wench yet again, finishing -6 in the quota game.
Because we went out in tee times, we didn't get a chance to do a group photo, but in the photo below, our champion wears the newest Pirate Golf swag, the Champion's Chain. He will crown next month's champion in the 62nd Gaspar Invitational Tournament.
Next month, the Pirate Krewe is back in the Tampa Bay Area to play at the private Countryside Country Club. The Pink Ladies, Anne Rhodes, Jen Nichiporuk, Amy Fields and Cindy McGrath, along with honorary Pink Pirate, Manuel Villar, suggested doing a random drawing for groups next month to give players a chance to play with people they haven't played with before. Great idea!
