Lakewood National never disappoints, with a challenging layout and top conditions. While rain threatened in the last hour or so, everyone finished 18 holes of golf in our Pirate Invasion south of the Tampa Bay Area.
Bruce Oglevie, with an A Flight quota not matching his always consistently good play, took advantage of higher than normal scores to win his first Gaspar Invitational Tournament with a score of 82 and a +1.5 finish in the quota game. He ended up with 26.5 points off his 25 quota, and will now move up to a number more suitable for one of the best players in Gaspar Golf at 30. He wins $180 for 1st place.
2nd place in the A Flight finished in a tie between Brett Zurcher and Rico Velez. Brett shot a 76, and was +1.0, while Rico shot an 86 with a matching +1.0. Going to the scorecard, Brett won on the hardest hole with a birdie to Rico's double bogey, with Rico getting a shot on the hole. Brett wins $36 for 2nd place, plus another $15 for a skin.
The B Flight saw Gaspar Golf's most loyal player, Bill Capito Esquire, shooting an 85 to finish at +1.0 to win his 2nd Gaspar Invitational Tournament after being shut out for 7 straight seasons! Esquire takes home $180 for 1st.
We had a tie for 2nd in the B Flight also, with Fausto Diaz and Cindy McGrath both finishing at +0.5. Fausto shot a 92, and Cindy shot an 87. Fausto received a shot on the hardest hole, and both players made bogeys, giving Fausto 2nd place honors.
Our Wench for the month was Arun Chopra, a normally excellent player who had an off day, shooting a 91 to finish -11.5.
We had a total of 7 players who finished over their quotas this month, with the course winning over the field of 36 golf pirates. New player Cameron B ended up with the best score against his conditional quota at +3 after shooting a nice 77. 29 players failed to beat their quotas, and will see them drop by 1 point for next month's tournament.
We return to Clermont National on September 19, which has one of the coolest after-golf vibes in Florida. Last year, there were probably 100-200 people hanging out in the area between the clubhouse and food gazebos, with a huge putting green allowing kids of all ages to run around having a blast. It is definitely one of the most family friendly golf clubs in Central Florida, and the golf course is great!
