Some golf courses just seem to fit a certain player's game. That appears to be the case at Black Diamond Ranch, on their incredible Quarry Course, as Mike Hauch repeated his win from last season on the Quarry Course. The weather flirted with us for an hour or so, with some drizzles adding to the drama, but play was never haulted, and it became a gorgeous day in Lecanto. We had 13 brand new Pirates join the krewe, and ended up with a field of 63 players.

At the 2023 Azalea Classic, the day started out on Saturday morning in blistering heat as players warmed up, and then we got a breezy start to the tournament at 1:30. About halfway through the round, the winds died down, and while still a hot day, it was not quite as muggy as it was in the morning. On a sticky and hot Saturday afternoon in Orlando, Dave "They call me mellow" Tomello won his first event since taking the 4th Gaspar tournament back in 2019, shooting a tidy 80, in route to a +6.5 finish, besting 39 other Golf Pirates. Dave achieved a total of 29.5 points off his 23 Quota, and won the $252 1st prize money, along with the title of Jose Gaspar again after 41 events from his last win.

In an exciting sudden death playoff, Mike Caporale and Carlos Marcelino went back to #18 to decide the winner of the Crooked Cat Fight at Orange County National. After pushing on #18, they went to #1, and Caporale made par to Carlos's bogey, and won the title of Jose Gaspar for May 2023. Mike's quota jumped to 43 after his win, so it's time for everyone to challenge our resident pro!

"Trick" Rick Rhodes joined the 2-time winners club with a great performance at Juliette Falls, an hour and a half north of Tampa, on a stunningly beautiful Saturday on the golf course. Rick's +7.5 win bettered 2 players who had tied for 2nd place, just 1/2 point behind the top. Rick shot 87, and added 52 points to his Gaspar Cup total, getting closer to the top of the season-long leaderboard. His prize money was $346 for 1st place, and he is our April 2023 Jose Gaspar.

In one of the best individual performances in Gaspar Golf history, Adam Larson fired a 2-over-par 74, with 34-1/2 points, to shatter his Quota of 24 with a +10-1/2 finish. Larson last won a year and one month ago in the February 2022 event, so he joins the small group of players who have won 2 times on the Pirate Tour. Bill "Big Pole" Kilichowski, usually an emotional wreck on the golf course, kept it all together as he shot the lowest round of his career to win the 2023 Pirate Invasion at Skyview Golf & Country Club. It was a cold and breezy day in Howey-in-the-Hills, an hour and a half north of Tampa. 41 Pirates braved the frigid temps to play our first tournament at Mission Inn Resort & Club on the famed El Campeon course. Some days, golfers win. On other days, the course comes out on top. On Saturday, the course and weather combined to beat back all golfers but one, the lone lefty in the field, Jans Tamayo.

Frank "Former Playboy" Perez, aka the "Green Eyed Bandit," won the 2nd event of the 2022-2023 Gaspar Cup Season, besting Ay Que Rico "Suave" Velez in a scorecard playoff. Unfortunately, by the time we call got to the clubhouse, it was dark, and no sudden death playoff was possible.
